Funeral Day

Yesterday was filled with family, ceremony, and deep thoughts as we attended the funeral for a member of our extended family. She was a Marine and it is always impressive to see the ceremony conducted by both retired and active members of the Corps.

But she was also mom, grandma, great-grandma and friend; seamstress, author, surrogate parent and recycler extraordinaire.

A day like yesterday reminds me that what I do with today does make a difference. It reminds me that a story is being written, whether written down or not. Will I look back with fond memories or bitter tears? Will my story involve many characters or loneliness?

Let’s all remember life’s fragility and permanence. Fragile, for we can be gone at any moment. Yet permanent, for what we have done in the preceding moment can never be changed. How will my next moment be spent?
