The Faithful Reward

When Abram’s nephew, Lot, and many others of the area were captured by an invading army Abram took his servants and those neighbors who wished to help and fought for the return of the captives (Genesis 14). When Abram returned victorious, the king of the invaded land offered him a great reward. But Abram would take nothing but the expenses of those who went with him (Genesis 14:21-24). Abram could have been enriched almost beyond measure in earthly goods, but he instead wanted God, those around him, and most importantly himself to know that he depended fully and only on the Lord.

I don’t think it is a coincidence that in the very next verse (15:1) the Lord came to Abram in a vision encouraging him, “Fear not.” Jehovah promised that he was Abram’s shield and his exceeding great reward. He had previously promised that Abram’s family would increase beyond number: “If a man can number the dust of the earth, than may your seed be numbered” (Genesis 13:16). Abram didn’t know how that promise would be fulfilled but, “he believed in Jehovah; and it was reckoned to him for righteousness” (Genesis 15:6). Jehovah saw and rewarded Abram’s faithfulness. And God’s faithfulness would always be greater than any Abram could even expect.

Lord, help me know Abram’s confidence in my own life. Help me turn from the baubles of the world to find the true riches of your faithfulness.
