Good in an Evil World

“And Jehovah saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (Genesis 6:5)

A quick look back through history reveals that this observation could have been made at many different times. We often wonder how the world could be so full of evil. It seems people immerse themselves in it so easily.

But there is a follow-up to that thought. It’s in verses 8 and 9: “But Noah found favor in the eyes of Jehovah… Noah was a righteous man, and perfect in his generations: Noah walked with God.”

There have always been active people of God somewhere in society. They often become overshadowed by others bent on evil living. Noah is certainly one example of that. Sometimes, the religious leaders can’t even find them: “Or know ye not what the scripture saith of Elijah? how he pleadeth with God against Israel: ‘Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.’ But what saith the answer of God unto him? ‘I have left for myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal.’ Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant…” (Romans 11:2-5).

Like Noah, like the 7000 God told Elijah about, and like the remnant the Apostle Paul mentioned, there is still today an active body of true God followers, those who have not given in to the seduction of evil. Now, it’s true that everyone has some sin, some mistake that can mar their soul. But with God’s gracious offer of salvation and your decision to accept it, you, too, can be part of God’s precious family. No matter how evil the day looks, God will see through it to find the heart that searches for him.
